Disappearance of Anton "Tone" Skarja

GHM-alpinisme: The legendary Slovenian expedition leader "Tone" Skarja died at the age of 83.

After the premature death in 1984 of the other great Slovenian leader, Ales Kunaver, Skarja finds himself the sole patron of mountaineering in his country. For half a century, his influence was decisive for the emergence of the small nation as a leading player in international mountaineering. The majority of the big names in Slovenian mountaineering during this period will in fact be under the thumb of the charismatic leader, not without tensions at times.

Beyond its 1000 climbs (see the link of the news in Slovenian presenting some of its achievements including in the Alps), some essential dates to remember among the expeditions led by Skarja (except at Cho Oyu where he was just member):
1979: premiere of the complete west ridge of Everest.
1985: premiere of the north face of Yalung Kang.
1988; first of the north face of Cho Oyu.
1989: premiere of the southeast ridge of Shisha Pangma.
1991: first of the southern ridge of southern Kangchenjunga, awarded the first Piolet d'Or in 1992. During the same expedition, several other achievements to remember: an advanced attempt east of Jannu East, the central and main summits of "Kangch "as well as the summits of Boktoh and Talung, chained by Stremfelj and Prezelj during their acclimatization period!
1995: first complete ski descent of the Annapurna I.

From 1965 to 2009, Skarja will have visited Nepal 15 times, his passion crystallizing in the Kangchenjunga region during six rather fruitful stays on these mountains - including the aforementioned "hold up" of 1991. "A non-toxic passion! “Marko Prezelj guarantees me one day! Skarja will dedicate a book to the "Five Treasures of the Great Snow", unfortunately not translated from Slovenian.

In 2012, when young high-level Slovenian mountaineers, Nejc Marcic and Luka Strazar (the latter future winner of the north face of Latok 1 with Ales Cesen and Tom Livingstone in 2018) returned from the premiere of the west face of Janak Chuli (7041m), summit located not far from the "Kangch" dear to Skarja, after their interview in Kathmandu by Miss Hawley she asked them: "How is Tone?". The young leader of the expedition, Miha Habjan, replied to the columnist that he had seen him climb with ease in a not so easy icefall a few months ago, already over 75 years old!
