In 1982 China was widening access to travellers but the remote regions of Tibet were still closed to all but a few expeditions who were willing to pay upwards of fifty thousand dollars for the privilege. Many people who we met on this expedition had never set eyes on westerners and our film director who was a tall red head attracted particular attention. This film depicts the 1982 Canadian expedition and contrasts it with the expedition of fifty years earlier that was the first to reach the summit of Mt Gongga Shan. The film was shot on 16mm stock and I still have the winterized spring wound bolex that, without the aid of sherpas or porters, proved to be the only practical camera for high altitude filming.
